Historic Home Bathroom Renovation & Addition
Last week we had a look at the kitchen renovations — this week we’re going to talk about the bathroom projects in this historic home for sale near Harpers Ferry. As of 2019, the main house at Mount Ellen consisted of 1 bedroom and 1.5 bathrooms. To solve this predicament, a couple rooms were converted to bedrooms and a 2-story addition was added to create 2 en suite bathrooms bringing the main house bringing the total to 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.
This addition was built on a full basement enclosed by a custom mahogany door, exterior clad brick foundation and John Hardie plank siding to match existing structures. It was constructed with 2×6 exterior walls and 2×4 interior. (Construction meets or exceeds 2015 IRC code.)
The addition creates a mirrored floor plan — the bathroom on the first floor is mirrored on the second floor. Both en suite bathrooms feature 18×28 ceramic tile floor, cast iron claw foot tub & showers, 36” custom furniture vanities with marble tops, water closets, and walk-in closets. The original exterior walls remain exposed, adding a textural element of painted brick to the rooms. Custom mahogany windows, trim, and sills were carefully selected to match the existing historic windows.
The original bathroom received a face lift of its own. All wiring was brought to code, new light fixtures installed, the toilet was enclosed as a WC, installed a 72” cast iron and copper claw foot tub along with its added plumbing (ie: floor mounted faucet), all new chrome faucet fixtures, and new oak custom painted vanity with quartz top and hammered nickel sinks. The striking tile selections include marble herringbone floor tiles with a honed Carrara marble floor perimeter and base trim, blue/green mosaic tiles in the standing shower with stone threshold and coordinating shelf.
Next time, we’ll have a look at pool and hardscaping!
